Explicit talk about racial differences is conspicuously absent in the public debate in the Netherlands. Hierarchical and discriminatory statements and actions are phrased in the tonality of culture. Islam and the ethnic specificities of newcomers hailing from the Global South are emphasized. Most politicians, academics, and opinion makers, aver that though racism exists, today race is not the main focal point in relation to how most citizens seek to come to terms with the multicultural drift. As such what emerges is the culturalization of citizenship: the ideology and related practices of cultural engineering. The idea being that what is necessary is the common tuning of the emotions and rationale of all Dutch citizens towards ultimate allegiance to the Dutch nation. Therein nativism raises its head as oldcomers argue that they ought to have more say in how the new project of Dutchness is given form.
The question is whether this is all about culture, in which in time equal Dutchness can be achieved by newcomers, or, whether biologically based ascription remains a hidden transcript in the culturalization of citizenship.
So the question is: Whatever happened to racism in the Netherlands?
To answer this we will be inviting Prof Paul Gilroy and other groundbreaking scholars to compare the Dutch case in relation to similar processes in Europe.

NO NEED TO APPLY, JUST BE ON TIME :) Op woensdagavond 28 november vond de dialoog Hoezo zwarte piet, hoezo alleen maar nette mensen? plaats, een dialoog over beeldvorming, sociale uitsluiting, discriminatie en racisme in de Nederlandse samenleving. Ruim 100 studenten, young professionals en overige geïnteresseerden zijn op het evenement afkomen op de Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Lees hier het verslag en check de foto’s. Enkele dagen na de dialoog heeft de Amsterdamse wethouder Andree van Es openlijk uitgesproken dat Zwarte Piet een racistisch element van het Sinterklaas feest is.
‘Het Sinterklaasfeest is ooit begonnen zonder Zwarte Piet en het wordt tijd om ermee door te gaan zonder Zwarte Piet.’ Voor de Amsterdamse wethouder Andrée van Es staat vast dat de zwarte knecht van Sinterklaas zijn langste tijd heeft gehad. Daarmee is zij de eerste bestuurder in het land die openlijk afstand neemt van het fenomeen dat onlosmakelijk verbonden lijkt met het heerlijk avondje.
